I have received many requests for a leg vise and X Link scissors parallel guide that will work with a Moravian bench. Some of you may be wondering what a Moravian bench is. The Moravians were a settlement of German speaking Protestants in what is now known as Winston-Salem North Carolina. There is a workbench on display at the J. Blum house in the Old Salem Museum and Gardens that was created and used by the Moravian’s. It is [...]
Here is a very nicely done video by James Wright showing how he installs a VX20 leg vise coupled with an X Link parallel guide. James is a hand tool woodworker and produces videos from "Wood by Wright." His videos are very entertaining and his video productions is top notch. His leg vise is customized with butterfly keys and some nice carvings. He opted for the metal hand wheel to top off the installation. Enjoy!
The end of the year is near and the Hovarter Custom Vise accounting department luckily found some extra money in the budget so we decided to spring for some new equipment. We purchased a Lincoln Square Wave 200 TIG welder! We have some new products that we are working on which will require some precision welding and this unit fit the bill. TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas and it utilizes a non-consumable tungsten electrode to form the arc [...]
I frequently use a utility knife in my day to day life and more often than not I must go on a search mission to find it when it is needed. Often I find it in or near our shipping department which is run by my wife. I decided to tackle this problem head on so I decided to head off to the local home center and buy another knife. My current utility knife is a basic solid handled [...]
When our shop was built about 20 years ago there was a small oak tree about 15 feet away. It was a nice tree and provided some decent shade. It was also a good place to put out the bird feeders (and squirrel feeder) for the wide variety of Woodpeckers, Finches, Cardinals and Bluebirds. It is always interesting how the trees grow so slowly that you don’t even perceive how large they have become. Our once small tree had [...]
We have added the new slotted bearings for the VX20F face vise. The slotted bearings are an option to make it easy to create a close fitting slot to help reduce vertical racking with the VX20F face vise. Vertical racking occurs when you clamp your work above the clamp shafts. If the clamp shafts fit very loosely to the front jaw then the jaw will try to pivot out at the top creating poor clamping. When you clamp work [...]
We have changed the design of the rear bearing for the VX20W wagon vise. The old style rear bearing used the front bearing from the VX20 vise mounted to a sturdy angle bracket. While the old designed worked well the new design has a few advantages. It is similar to an industrial style pillow block bearing and is made in one piece out of solid Delrin. It takes up less space than the old style angle bracket and is [...]
After struggling with our previous website for so long we have finally launched a completely new site that fixes the numerous problems we had with the old site. All of the videos are now available on the gallery tab and we also have pictures of vises and benches on that tab as well. We were having trouble with the download of the directions but that has been fixed on the new site. We hope you like the new website [...]
